An albino armored catfish Schizolecis guntheri (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from an Atlantic Forest coastal basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Brito,Marcelo F. G. de; Caramaschi,Érica P..
We report here on an albino specimen of Schizolecis guntheri caught in the rio Bonito in the rio Macaé basin, Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil. The hypothesis that albinism is more common in fishes with cryptobiotic and/or nocturnal habits is strengthened by additional records of this chromatic anomaly.

Feeding habits of Thoracocharax stellatus (Characiformes: Gasteropelecidae) in the upper rio Tocantins, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Netto-Ferreira,André L.; Albrecht,Míriam P.; Nessimian,Jorge L.; Caramaschi,Érica P..
The silver hatchetfish Thoracocharax stellatus is one of the approximately 200 fish species recorded for the upper rio Tocantins, in the region where it was impounded by the Serra da Mesa hydroelectric dam. Analysis of the stomach contents of 88 specimens revealed a diet consisting almost entirely of insects (99.6%), most of which were terrestrial (87.6%). Ants, beetles, and mayflies were the main food items. Dawn and dusk seemed to be the periods of highest foraging activity for T. stellatus. As a specialist on terrestrial insects, this species has a close connection with the region near the river bank, where prey is provided from the associated riparian vegetation. Despite the impoundment and depletion of the land-water ecotone observed in later stages...

Following food clouds: feeding association between a minute loricariid and a characidiin species in an Atlantic Forest stream, Southeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Leitão,Rafael P.; Caramaschi,Érica P.; Zuanon,Jansen.
Following behavior is a widespread feeding tactic among marine fishes, but remains poorly documented for freshwater fishes. The present study describes such association between two freshwater species: the minute armored catfish Parotocinclus maculicauda and the South American darter Characidium sp. During underwater observations in an Atlantic Forest stream, we recorded Characidium sp. closely following P. maculicauda (<5cm), catching the particles dislodged by this catfish's grazing activity. The following behavior displayed by the darter is considered opportunistic and possibly favors the capture of preys associated to the periphyton. This study is one of the few records of nuclear-follower feeding association between freshwater fishes and the first...

Longitudinal distribution of Hypostomus punctatus (Osteichthyes, Loricariidae) in a coastal stream from Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil BABT
Menezes,Márcia S. de; Caramaschi,Érica P..
Hypostomus punctatus was collected between June/1987 and July/1988, in three sampling stations with different features, along the Ubatiba stream (Maricá, Rio de Janeiro state). Sampling stations 2 and 3 were more similar (50% similarity) to each other. The species was frequent and persistent in all sampling stations. The size varied from 1.0 to 22.2 cm. The occurrence of different size classes along the stream was probably related to the kind of environment. Young forms prevailed in the total sample and were mainly collected next to the submersed riparian vegetation. Adults occurred just in sampling stations 1 and 2, and were found most often in rapids with rocky bottom, and in pools among submersed branches.

Ocupação espacial, alimentação e época reprodutiva de duas espécies de Corydoras Lacépède (Siluroidei, Callichthyidae) coexistentes no rio Alambari (Botucatu, São Paulo) Zoologia
Aranha,José Marcelo R.; Caramaschi,Érica P.; Caramaschi,Ulisses.
Patterns of spatial occupation, feeding, and reproductive period of two species, Corydoras aeneus and Corydoras gr. carlae (Siluroidei, Callichthyidae), coexistents in the Alambari River (Botucatu, São Paulo), were studied. High diet overlap, partial spatial segregation, and well differentiated reproductive strategies were verified. These findings do not permit to evidence the occurrence of competitive interactions between the analysed species.

Resource use by the facultative lepidophage Roeboides affinis (Günther, 1868): a comparison of size classes, seasons and environment types related to impoundment Neotropical Ichthyology
Albrecht,Miriam P.; Reis,Vanessa C. S.; Caramaschi,Érica P..
We report the consumption of scales and other food resources by the facultative lepidophage Roeboides affinis in the upper Tocantins River where it was impounded by the Serra da Mesa Hydroelectric Dam. We compared the diet among size classes, between dry and wet seasons, and between sites with distinct water flow characteristics (lotic vs. lentic) related to the distance from the dam and phase of reservoir development. As transparency and fish abundance increased after impoundment, we expected a higher consumption of scales in lentic sites. Likewise, habitat contraction, higher transparency and decrease in terrestrial resources availability, would promote a higher consumption of scales. Scales were consumed by 92% of individuals and represented 26% of the...

Resource use by two electric fishes (Gymnotiformes) of the National Forest Saracá-Taquera, Oriximiná, Pará Neotropical Ichthyology
Soares,Bruno E.; Rosa,Daniela C. O.; Silva,Nathália C. S.; Albrecht,Miriam P.; Caramaschi,Érica P..
ABSTRACT Fishes of the order Gymnotiformes have high diversity of oral and head morphology, which suggests trophic specializations within each clade. The aim of this study was to describe resource use patterns by two fish species (Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni and Gymnotus coropinae) in the National Forest Saracá-Taquera, Oriximiná - Pará, analyzing microhabitat use, diet composition, feeding strategies, niche breadth and niche overlap. Stomach contents of 101 individuals (41 G. rondoni and 60 G. coropinae), sampled in 23 headwater streams were analyzed and volume of food items was quantified to characterize their feeding ecology. Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni was captured mainly on sandy bottoms, whereas G. coropinae in crevices. Both species had a...

Temporal variation in fish composition and abundance in a perennial tributary of the rio Paraguaçu, a little-known drainage in the Brazilian semi-arid region Neotropical Ichthyology
Santos,Alexandre Clistenes de A.; Caramaschi,Érica P..
The rio Santo Antônio is a perennial lowland stream in the Brazilian semi-arid region, and is the main tributary of the upper rio Paraguaçu, an important drainage of the Chapada Diamantina. The temporal variation of the fish composition and abundance in a stretch of the middle course of the river was evaluated. Sampling was carried out monthly between August 1998 and July 1999, using standardized gear and techniques. Data on water and air temperature, water transparency, maximum and mean depth, width and area of the channel, and flow were recorded on each fish sampling occasion. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were employed in order to detect significant temporal differences in environmental parameters and fish abundance. Temperature,...

Variation in the structure of the ichthyoplankton community in the lower Paraíba do Sul River Neotropical Ichthyology
Teixeira,Gabriel E.; Bialetzki,Andréa; Soares,Bruno E.; Souza,Guilherme; Caramaschi,Érica P..
ABSTRACT The Paraíba do Sul River is affected by extensive water collection for supply, organic and industrial pollution, and dams. Nonetheless, the ichthyofauna maintains biodiversity and sustains artisanal fisheries. This study analyzes the composition, abundance and distribution of fish larvae, an important approach to determine the reproductive period and spawning sites. The sampling occurred from August 2011 through February 2013 in five sites at a transect between the banks on the lower reach of the Paraíba do Sul River. A total of 5,412 larvae belonging to 20 taxa was captured. The predominant order was Characiformes. Larvae of Prochilodus spp. and Leporinus spp. were the most abundant; larvae of Brycon insignis, an endangered species, were present....

Vertical segregation of two species of Hyphessobrycon(Characiformes: Characidae) in the Cabiúnas coastal lagoon, southeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Lima,Sergio M. Q.; Cunha,André A.; Sánchez-Botero,Jorge I.; Caramaschi,Érica P..
Segregation in the use of the water column by two congeneric species of Characidae, Hyphessobrycon bifasciatus and H. luetkenii, was investigated through underwater observations in the Cabiúnas coastal lagoon in northeastern Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The use of the water column by the two species differed significantly. Hyphessobrycon luetkenii occupied mainly the uppermost stratum, with 79% of the observations within 20 cm of the surface; whereas H. bifasciatus was more common between 20 cm and 40 cm below the surface (55% of the observations). Predation pressure, macrophyte cover and nutrient distribution may influence this vertical segregation.
